WHO WE ARE
The British Society for Childrens Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS)
The British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery was founded in 1984 to promote Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery in the UK. It provides a forum for discussion of research, advances in clinical practice and the results of surgical procedures pertaining to the practice of children's orthopaedics and trauma. Membership is open to UK practitioners for whom Children's Orthopaedics represents a substantial part of their practice and professional interest. The Society meets once a year for a two-day meeting involving lectures and papers, and contributes to instructional sessions at the annual British Orthopaedic Association Congress.

Dr. Melita Irving is a Consultant Clinical Geneticist and Honorary Reader at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London. She is an expert in diagnosing and managing a wide range of genetic conditions, particularly rare diseases affecting the skeleton.

Professor Marek Jóźwiak is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with the Poznan University of Medical Sciences and the Wiktor Dega Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital. Key roles and accomplishments Head of Paediatric Orthopaedics: Professor Jóźwiak has been the Head of the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Wiktor Dega Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital since 2014. He also oversees the hospital's Robotic Rehabilitation Center for Children. National Consultant: In January 2025, he was appointed Poland's National Consultant in the field of Medical Rehabilitation, a position he will hold until December 2029. Academic and Clinical Focus: His work includes both a surgical and rehabilitative approach to treating children. His primary scientific interests include: Cerebral palsy Congenital limb deformities Gait pathology and biomechanics Spinal muscular atrophy Motion Analysis Laboratory: He has been the Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences since 2002. Dega Osteotomy: Professor Jóźwiak has been a leading figure in the legacy of Wiktor Dega's work, particularly the Dega pelvic osteotomy, a significant surgical technique in paediatric orthopaedics. In 2019, he led an international live surgery webinar celebrating the 50th anniversary of the procedure. Leadership Positions: He previously served as the president of the Polish Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Society from 2014 to 2016 and the Polish Academy of Childhood Disability from 2022 to 2023

Dr. Mark Latimer is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, with a special interest in skeletal dysplasias and soft-tissue knee injuries. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Cambridge University, involved in teaching, medical exams, and research. He also serves as the Honorary Treasurer for the Skeletal Dysplasia Group.

Dr. Adam Shortland is a Consultant Clinical Scientist and the manager of the One Small Step Gait Laboratory at Guy's & St. Thomas' Hospital in London. He is also an honorary Reader in Clinical Biomechanics at King's College London. Key aspects of his work include: Specialty: Shortland assesses children and adults with cerebral palsy and other conditions using 3D movement capture technology. Academic involvement: As the Course Director for the MSc in Clinical Science (Clinical Engineering) at King's College London, he helps train physical science graduates for clinical practice. Clinical focus: His clinical interests lie in rehabilitation and the clinical measurement of movement. Research: His research focuses on gait and muscle development, particularly in children with cerebral palsy. Gait lab history: He has worked at the One Small Step Gait Laboratory since it was founded in 1998. Referrals: The gait laboratory at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital directs referrals to Dr. Adam Shortland.

Dr. Michael Wright is a Consultant Clinical Geneticist and Joint Medical Director at Newcastle Hospitals. He is also an Associate Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. Current and previous roles Joint Medical Director, Newcastle Hospitals: Appointed in March 2024, having previously served as Deputy Medical Director. Paediatric Geneticist, The Northern Genetics Service: He continues to practice clinically within the Northern Genetics Service, which is part of Newcastle Hospitals. Medical Director, North East and Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service Alliance: In this role, he helps oversee the latest genomic developments to benefit patients across the region. Chair, Diagnostics North East (DxNE): DxNE is a collaborative network focused on developing and implementing new diagnostics for better patient outcomes. Co-founder, NewGene Ltd: He was a founding director and later chair of this joint venture between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University, which provides next-generation DNA diagnostic testing.
